Pigments or colorants in skincare: how to choose?

Why color a skincare product?

Colouring a cosmetic product serves several purposes:

  1. Visual appeal: color makes the product more attractive and reinforces the brand image.
  2. Identity and functionality: Some colors evoke specific properties (green for soothing, blue for moisturizing) or help correct imperfections (such as neutralizing redness).
  3. User experience: A pleasant color enhances the sensory experience.
  4. Visual uniformity: Hide natural variations in ingredients for a homogeneous appearance.
  5. Consumer confidence: Color can reinforce the perception of product quality and efficiency.

Color thus combines aesthetics, marketing and functionality to enhance the experience and perception of the product.

Pigments or colorants in skincare: how to choose?

The choice depends on the desired effect:

  • Choose a pigment if: you have a soap or hybrid make-up project that requires intense, covering color. Pigments give an opaque color, are insoluble and require a grinding step to be used if they are pure.
  • Choose a colorant if: you're looking for transparent color in a care, hygiene or hair care product, for example. They are soluble and the shade can be adjusted according to the % of use.
